Market Radar: What to Keep an Eye on Online
By Kathleen Montecillo

The Internet is a big place, so when we say “You should keep an eye on things out there,” we get that it sounds overwhelming. Between reviews of your business, social media, and all the other gazillion things going on, it’s hard to keep up. And when it comes to online, things change super fast. That’s why we’ve made a list of the essentials to keep on your radar. Here are the top things you should be looking out for.

Customer reviews

Your customers don’t hesitate to share their experiences with your brand, good or bad. Reviews give you the opportunity to hear how you’re doing from the people who matter most. And that’s why they should constantly be on your radar. Respond to all reviews and thank people for their feedback. When you get a bad one, don’t panic. See it as an opportunity to show off your great customer service and how far you’ll go to make things right.

Search engine updates

Google changes its search algorithm 500–600 times a year. Most of these changes are minor and you don’t have to worry about them. But every once in a while, they’ll throw in a game changer. Example: In 2015, Google updated its algorithm to give mobile-optimized sites search result priority. When the big changes happen, adjust your SEO strategy. You don’t have to react to every single change, do your research to see if the bigger ones require action.

Your competition

You should be your competition’s most loyal follower online. See how their social media, pricing strategy, customer service, reviews, etc. stack up against yours. And learn what it will take for you to stand out. For example, you might see a pattern in their reviews that shows you should offer a product/service they don’t. In a nutshell: Find out what they’re doing wrong, what they’re doing right, and how you can do the right things even better.

Developments in design

It’s easy for your site to look outdated if you leave it untouched year after year. So keep up with what’s cutting edge in design. These elements will help your site stand out. And they’ll do more than just make it look good — simple changes in design can affect UX and conversion rates. Don’t jump on the bandwagon for every new trend, but get inspired by one every once in a while to keep your site fresh.

Social media trends

Like search engines, social media platforms are always tweaking things, whether it’s a new way to organize feeds or upgrades to their advertising options. And as for the content that’s shared on social media, it’s all about trends. People are talking about what’s happening now. To be part of those conversations, you have to keep up. Research what type of content captures the most attention to pick up some inspo.
