By Kathleen Montecillo

With over 700 million monthly active users, Instagram has become a powerhouse for social media marketing. And with that comes a lot of competition. Posts used to appear in chronological order, but now they’re based on a user’s likes, their interests, and what’s popular. We know it’s frustrating when you post great content but it just doesn’t reach the top of people’s feeds, so here are five ways to make sure you don’t get lost in the crowd.

1. Post what your followers are interested in.
80% of Instragrammers follow a business. It’s more important than ever to know who your followers are and what they’re interested in to stay relevant. Some tips: Check out your competition to see what works for them, highlight your company’s awesome culture, and don’t forget variety — switch it up between posting photos and videos to keep things fresh.

2. Start talking.
Instagram has 58x more engagement per follower than Facebook and 120x more than Twitter. What’s that mean? It means you should get the conversation started. Respond to comments, reply to messages, and post engaging photos or videos. And don’t forget about captions — a witty and engaging caption is much more likely to get a response.

3. Use Instagram’s advertising platform.
Instagram’s advertising platform is great for businesses of all sizes because they allow anyone to promote posts. You can do this with your photos, videos, or stories. The best part is that you’re sharing your message on a platform that loves engagement. Tip: if you don’t want to spend, use trending hashtags related to your industry. Posts with at least one hashtag generate over 12% more engagement than those without.

4. Ask people to subscribe.
The most direct way to get your content to the top is to ask your followers to subscribe to you. When a follower subscribes to your account, Instagram gives you priority on their feed and notifies them when you post. To do this all your followers need to do is go to your profile and on the top right corner click “turn on post notifications.”

5. Track your analytics.
The best way to improve your content is to watch for what works and what doesn’t, and then adjust. Making tweaks to your strategy helps you post great content your followers will love. Just remember not to sacrifice quality for quantity. Your posts reflect the quality of your brand, so only your best content should make the cut.
